Origins and History of Aquamarine

Aquamarine derives its name from the Latin words "aqua" (water) and "marina" (of the sea), paying homage to its captivating blue-green hues reminiscent of the ocean's depths. Belonging to the beryl family of gemstones, aquamarine shares its lineage with emeralds, morganite, and heliodor.

Mined primarily in Brazil, Madagascar, and Nigeria, aquamarine's allure has captivated civilizations throughout history.

Throughout ancient legends, aquamarine was revered as a talisman of protection for sailors and travellers, believed to ensure safe passage across treacherous seas. In addition to its protective properties, aquamarine was associated with various mystical and healing attributes. In medieval times, it was believed to enhance intuition and promote spiritual enlightenment, earning it a place among the cherished gemstones of royalty and nobility.

Queen Elizabeth's Aquamarine Tiara

British Queen Elizabeth's aquamarine tiara features several Brazilian aquamarines. In 1957, she commissioned the custom design tiara from Garrad to match her aquamarine necklace and earrings. The woman clearly had good taste! She had the platinum piece set with aquamarines and diamonds generously gifted to her by then Brazilian President Getúlio Vargas as a coronation gift in 1953. The Queen has worn her aquamarine set on many occasions, making it almost as famous as the monarch herself.

In 1971, thanks to generous gifts of aquamarines by the Governor of Sao Paulo, Brazil, the tiara received new stones for an upgrade. Upgrades are always welcome, right? A larger aquamarine replaced the tiara's centre stone, making this piece one breathtaking piece of custom jewellery.

As we conclude so that we can celebrate the month of March and all those born under its mystical influence, let us honour the beauty and significance of aquamarine. If it's good enough for Queeny, it certainly is good enough for us right?
